Today I learned an important lesson. A new product was released today, and I had been advertising where no one else was. People were having trouble getting their ads approved and I figured out a way to do it. All of a sudden I see a competitors’ ad running. Hum…I went and checked my ad costs, and in the last 15 minutes I had received more clicks than in the previous day plus. Wow, what happened? No one registered. I got to thinking, so I checked Google Analytics and the clicks had all come from the same person.
My competitor’s new ad was offering over $13,000 of free product. He was offering this to win a contest. So I wrote to the company expressing how unprofessional I felt it was to offer 14 items at almost 7 times the price of the original product. This really cheapens the product and is very unprofessional. I was told that each affiliate can choose what they want to offer. I can understand offering a few freebies. I’m sorry, offering 14 additional products for free, I would consider ridiculous.
What I learned was that some people think it is more important to hound the same group of people with an enormous amount of emails trying to sell the same product, then to reach out to new people who might be interested. Bringing in new customers opens the doors to more opportunties for you. We all want to make money, but it should also be just as important in how we go about doing it. There are many people out there who don’t want to give their email address because they’re afraid of getting a flood of emails. Show people that you are interested in helping and expanding their knowledge. When you do the money will follow. I know of some very successful people who making a living on the internet that only send out one email per week.
I have made a great living in the past selling on the internet while maintaining a professional demeanor. I don’t believe in sending multiple emails every day to get someone’s attention. I know by my success that there are many people who believe the same way I do.
Bottom line to this story is don’t try to compete if you’re playing with the top 10 or so players in your industry. You will lose. Set your ethics and stand by them. If you’re going to succeed, don’t follow the crowd, and be aware that some of these people play dirty. When running ads, be sure to monitor them closely.
